Domain name is very important in today's world. Be it any company, internet presence is a must. Just imagine where would one look if one wants certain product or service. He will go to the internet, open a search engine and search for the products or services desired. Think how much customers, a business may be losing due to not having a website.
So our first step towards internet presence is to get a website for our company. For this we have to purchase domain name. Now the question arises why we have to purchase domain name and from whom we purchase the domain name. First of all we don't purchase, rather we take the domain name on rent. For this we have to understand uniform resource locator (URL).
Let us take the example of a website ‘AeromachineX’, which is a blog for aerospace science, spacecrafts and aircrafts. The URL of AeromachineX is https://www.aeromachinex.com. Here 'https' is hyper text transfer protocol, 'www' is the subdomain, 'aeromachinex' is the domain name and '.com' is top level domain (TLD).
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a multi stake holder group and a non profit organization responsible for name spaces and numerical spaces of the Internet, ensuring the network's stable and secure operation. It is the regulatory authority of internet world. Next comes the Registry that is responsible for allocating TLD like .com, .net, .info, etc. Then comes the Registrar that give us the domain name like 'aeromachinex' etc of our choice , if its available. Now the question arises why we pay rent for our domain. For this we have to understand that when a user search for our website. It is first directed to the registry and then to the registrar, then the registrar route the domain name to an actual server, without that service a domain name would lead nowhere. We pay rent for the server to which our domain name will be directed. A majority of the amount paid goes to the Registrar. Some amount goes to the Registry. And even a smaller amount goes to ICANN.
