Intel is accelerating local manufacturing in India with a new collaboration with 8 local companies, a mix of both EMS and ODMs. The semiconductor chip manufacturer says it will equip these companies with the required knowledge to set up laptop manufacturing for both domestic and international demand.
The collaboration will see the production of “complete” entry-level laptops in India, with Intel sharing its knowledge about SMT lines, setting up a quality control process for components, and benchmarking of finished products.
The companies Intel is collaborating with include Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. Some of these companies will be entering laptop manufacturing for the first time, Intel says.
The initiative was lauded by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar. “This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s Digital Economy to $1 Trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26,” he said.
Meanwhile, Santhosh Viswanathan, VP & MD of Intel’s India division said, “bringing in Intel’s technology-related investments and global system supply chain ecosystem knowledge exemplifies our dedication to fostering electronic manufacturing capabilities in India.”
In May, the Union Cabinet launched a Rs 17,000 crore incentive to boost local manufacturing in India. This scheme is expected to create Rs 4.7 lakh crore in incremental production over a period of 6 years.
Intel is also hosting the India Tech Ecosystem Summit later in November where it will bring together multiple local manufacturers to showcase a large portfolio of devices being made in India.
